Title: Biotech Logo
Iruini Nuva - May 30, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
I'm just redirecting the conversation from
this topic over here, where it'd be more appropriate.
Are there any changes or improvements that you feel could be made to the new logo? Having done some general market and public research, we've determined that the hexagon basis works very well, so lets not go into stuff like "What if your logo looked like a hippie van?"
-Zach- - May 30, 2007 11:13 PM (GMT)
I like the concept, but as Dwan also probably implied with his edit, I think the middle seems bare. Perhaps the "Hippie Van" could be displayed in the center of the logo? :P
Ok so seriously, if we put something in the middle, not even specifically an icon, but like a gradient or something, it'd fill out more, and look better in my opinion. :)
'B' - May 31, 2007 08:35 AM (GMT)
erm, what was wrong with the basic hexagon? i thought it was good...
Algernon the infamous - May 31, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
First of all, a basic hexagon is very cliche, and probably in use by eleven other companies out there. Second of all it does anything but represent the shoot-em-up style you guys have.
'B' - May 31, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)
okay so what other than a hexagon then?...
maybe a hexagon with something surround in it or inside it?...
or maybe a multicoloured marble hexagon?...
*DWAN* - May 31, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
A flaming B inside our current logo would look cool...

Alg. mentioned how it didn't match our shmup style, perhaps a little explosion? :P Or simply a nice flare or something. *shrugs*

It was just too...basic. It wasn't uniquely ours. In that way that symbol could be considered 'cliche'.

The thing is, in the past year, you've been the only person to point that out, and I'm not seeing a whole lot of backup for the point. Plus there seems to be a general public acceptance of our hexgonal logo. I did a quick scan of companies that use (or used) it or even a distant variant, and I only found one that is known on any decent scale. The company is Texaco, which used a hexagon starting in 1966 and decommissioned it in 1982 in favor of their circle/star/T logo, which is at least as cliche as ours.
Does it represent the a good shmup logo? Not necessarily, but we're in the process of expanding from that genre so it works. As a matter of fact, I was just complemented by the media department leader at the place where I just got a job (I think I start tomorrow :D) on how it maintained a good position for us to be able to expand where we want and being publicly memorable. I'm currently more inclined to listen to a business man who has been in management positions for the past 35+ years as opposed to a 15 year old who got banned from his core fanbase. Will I listen to your points? Yes, but I'll need good support for it to really have an impact and not be considered the rant of someone from another company. :P

The trick is that a flaming B doesn't fit with the new scheme.

?
likey no likey?
needs shadin obviously...
Iruini Nuva - May 31, 2007 03:43 PM (GMT)
Ooh very pretty. However, my goal is to make everything simpler. Partially just because that's the current cultural design shift (go look at Apple), but also because our old style honestly was too complex and busy. I did a bit of research in that area too, and I noticed that people were having a hard time reading our main header, which is why I switched to the new style.
So perhaps removing the circle would help?
'B' - May 31, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
but keep the octagon?
i'll also make a simple one...

Hold your tongue there, that same fifteen year old is enjoying a mass amount of public attention that amounts to over ten times the attention you've experienced without substantial exaggeration. You're not really in a position to make critical judgments of my company's status.
(and that said, getting banned from BZP was possibly the best business decision I've ever made. If you want to call it that.)
Anyway, it's your logo, not mine; regardless, it's not very imaginative it it doesn't really speak of a company with any amount of artistic originality. The videogame business is different than most other businesses; your fanbase won't remember your name by your logo but by the games you make, so all a logo has to do is command respect. A hexagon... doesn't really entice me to look at your company with any level of artistic respect. But that might be just me.
Keep in mind that the "general public" you're referring to qualifies as the 2,000 post topic you're sustaining on BZP. You haven't exactly mass advertised that logo of yours; the Anaglyph logo received various compliments from forums included GMC, BZP, AFF, and so on. We have, admittedly, also received complaints on it's complexity; however feedback has generally been good and as far as I can tell it's as memorable as any logo I've seen.
You haven't given a substantial reason why the hexagon makes a GOOD logo, either. You should really go with something more creative.
But again, it's your logo, and it's not my decision to make. Your company isn't much known for it's artistic style anyway- your fanbase seems to be more fond of the action.
Dwan, about your sig- Evolution has been observed on a micro scale. So at least two of those quotes are entirely inaccurate.
Iruini Nuva - May 31, 2007 09:42 PM (GMT)
Do you really intend to start the old war again? Either way, I don't intend to allow it continue. You are targeting a different type of fan than I am and you've been promoting more and have been in existence at least a year longer, so your numbers are not legitimately comparable.
I'm still waiting for a substantial reason that a hexagon is bad. It's clean, simple, and easily remembered. If you want to criticize it, go bother Texaco, they only survived 26 years with it. Besides, I fail to see a suggestion or improvement idea from you.
And purposely criticizing the company fails to make me see you in very good light, seeing as yours has faults of its own which we have chosen to disregard and not advertise, much less on your own forum. We expect the same courtesy from you.

The only hostility is coming from you. I have no intention for re-igniting a flame war that will get us nowhere, but you seem to find this subject matter to be touchier than I anticipated.
That said, I'm not marketing to a DIFFERENT type of fan; I just have a broader range.
I've given several reasons. It's not very original and creative. It's simplicity, while easy to remember, doesn't put your company in a respectable light. A few variants on it, like the one you're already using, is an improvement, but it could still use a bit of an update.
A suggestion for improvement? I'll do that once it's been established that the improvement is needed. It depends on what you have in mind for the company's image. If you want me to talk to a few artists I can.
The Anaglyph fanforums have few faults that I see. Yes, the forum is largely off-topic; but all of this activity will serve me well when I make the next big announcement. That's not a flaw, that's good business. If you've chosen to disregard any flaw you've seen in the forums it's for your sake and not mine; feel free to talk about all of the flaws your heart desires. I hardly think it damaging to talk about a forum's flaw to the very community you're criticizing; you'll likely get run out of the place. I'm living proof of that fact. I won't stop you from advertising my company's flaws, although I'd advise you against it; it won't help your image in the eyes of many BZPers who participate in software.
You're one to talk about criticizing a company, seeing as the first blow to any company as a whole was made by you. If you want respect from me, don't diss my company, or I WILL rub it in your face that I've seen more success than you. You shouldn't be surprised.
I really would rather not ignite another flame war. I was really just warning you about using a logo that could do more harm than good. This is advice, not a diss. You took it a little seriously and it resulted in this unfriendly exchange.

It's not bad, but personally I like the new logo in concept over the original hexagon design. Thus, I'd be more in favor of trying to improve on the new style, rather than trying to revive and adapt the old. :)

It would look good if you photoshoped it up; as it is it looks a little bland.
Iruini Nuva - May 31, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
w00t for Zach.
Yeah I'm pretty sure it'd look better photoshopped too. :P I might also try using the new logo with the wiring. It could add a bit more flavor.
Edit: Ok
here's a variant based off of Blasty's sprite.

It goes with the "tech" in our name. So I vote this one...atleast until we find an even better one.

Yes, that works. :) Now it doesn't feel so hollow! :D

Yeah, tis the grandest of logos, it is that indeed. :D
Algernon the infamous - June 1, 2007 05:19 PM (GMT)
I'd make the computer wire thingies a different color, but yeah, that looks much better.
Iruini Nuva - June 2, 2007 01:45 AM (GMT)
Change just to a lighter shade of gray (which now looking at it seems like a good idea), or to like, red or something?
Hm, maybe I'll try it with some purple.
*DWAN* - June 2, 2007 02:33 AM (GMT)
Sounds like a good idea boss.
PURPLE! FOR THE WIN!

I was actually thinking of the same green on the rest of the logo.
Iruini Nuva - June 2, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
Wouldn't that make them harder to see on it though?
Algernon the infamous - June 2, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
Yes, but the parts you can see would look cooler as part of the logo.
Nickbomb - June 4, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
Hmm, interesting. I like the circle design.

Oh and I had a nice conversation with a developer at a conference a couple days ago. He actually asked if we had had our logo professionally done! :)

Iruini Nuva - July 27, 2007 04:53 PM (GMT)
It was a father/son thing. We connected with some computer programmers/developers while we were there. It's pretty funny, one of them actually figured out how to use the faint bits of electrical interference that a sound card makes to create a random number generator.
UPSILON - August 3, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
Ok, Iruini, Here's the deal with the logo: It's a little blocky. Not the shape, it's just in some of the images here the edges hurt my eyes. Now yes, I'm a graphic artist, and yes, I do work for Anaglyph, but I'm not trying to insult or anything. Rather, I would be more than happy to smoothen out the image and/or share some techniques for improving the situation. Hit me up.

(Oh, and if you were wondering about my prowess, ask Dwan to show you his CG'd character again. And I've only gotten better since then.)

Thanks for the ofer Giggy, We'll have to see what IN says though.
PS- Did you ever get anyone to finish those sprites you wanted?

I've got nothing inherently against Anaglyph staff. Mostly just super-ego and/or overly critical posts. You're fine. Besides, I was actually intending to ask you to work for us the day Alg. announced he got you. XD That said, you have my approval to see what you can do.
UPSILON - August 3, 2007 05:21 PM (GMT)
No, Dwan, unfortunately I never got anyone to finish those sprites.
Also Iruini, while I do admit to being arrogant sometimes, it is/will be in a playful way. Just know I'm good with everyone.
Also, remember, I am anaglyph staff so although my George-Bush-Like "truth tourettes" would probably keep any gaming secrets safe, I would not advise you to disclose them to me. Because, well, obsessive honesty unfortunately works all ways except for the ways I need it to >.<
Ok, now for logo info...
If you want to clear up the edges, I suggest you use an image at least twice the size of what you actually need. Now (when working in photoshop or PSP or another layer-enabled raster program) you need to grab the exact color you're going to set it on on your forum and set that as the background. Finally, you want to zoom out on the picture until it is the actual size needed. Hit the "Print Screen" key (I don't know if there's a Mac equivilant) and use the selection tool to harvest the image. This is the technique I use frequently, and I believe it results in some rather smooth graphics.
Another plus of doing an image multiple times the needed size: Print quality. It's good if you, like me, are going to college for graphic design and need a portfolio.
Hope I helped ^.^
