Title: What Draws You To a Game?
Description: Effects? Aesthetics? None of the above?

This is a question that any good developer should ask the public: Why do you play the games you play? What attracts you to them?

I'd particularly like to examine this in the light of our games and software. What attracts you to it? What pushes you away?

Just as a general example of what attracts me to some games: I enjoy playing Crysis because of the vastness of the world. It has all of the core shooter materials, but lets you experiment with it far more than an average shooter like CoD4. Essentially, I like having some freedom to explore and just fool around with things rather than be forced along a certain path.

I concur, Mr. Gamemaker man, it is freedom to roam and explore a game that makes it interesting (well, to me at least). But also there's storyline. Though freedom is a very important part, storyline is an extreme issue with me in gaming. If I can't follow the story, then no amount of cool shooting, fun exploring, and enjoyable environments can make up for it. --my two cents worth.

Try RPGing then. Makes the time fly but lots of fun pending on the one you get.

I've always had a hard time getting into RPGs. Partially because they always felt too shallow to me. I realize that there can be hundreds of upgrades, etc. to get - that's not why they feel shallow. They feel that way to me because the whole goal of many players is simply get them. It gets repetitive.

The other reason is that they're too time consuming, though I have less right to complain about that as someone who's played nearly 150 hours of BF2142. :P

Yeah, I'll admit a lot of the games I like are oft placed in the RPG category, but I've got plenty of issues with them too. Never could get into FF and KH annoys me...or maybe it's just Dwan's weird obsession with it.

But I like games that have a good mix of genres, some RPG aspects and some puzzles, and some randomness thrown in for seasoning.

:o No explosions on that list?

And yeah, I never got why people liked KH...

Never really like explosions in games. Movies? yes. In person (though safe distance away, mind you)? Yes. In games? Not so much. dunno why.

So pretty much:

You like them if a character you're disconnected from does it.

You like them if you do it yourself.

But you don't like it when you make a character do it.

lol
